2019 MercedesTrophy Golf Tournament

The annual Hawkes Bay MercedesTrophy Dealer Golf Day was hosted on Wednesday 20th February directly following Art Deco Week at the Napier Golf Club.

The tournament exclusively hosted 20 Mercedes-Benz owners, who were each vying for the opportunity to qualify for the MercedesTrophy National Final, to be held at the luxurious Cape Kidnappers Golf Resort 26-28 April 2019.

2019 marks a 30th anniversary year for the MercedesTrophy series and also the 100th anniversary of the NZ Open which was first hosted at the Napier Golf Club back in 1919.

To celebrate this MercedesTrophy milestone previous winners of the ‘once in a lifetime experience’ World Final were invited back to compete once again to represent Team New Zealand in Germany.

Playing in perfect summer conditions, after 18 holes of competition, the eligible overall winner was announced to be Lea Wallace, playing on her home course. Lea who was runner-up in 2018 was a clear winner this year with 39 points, 6 shots ahead of her husband Peter Wallace.

Daily prizes for men’s and ladies divisions. These winners included: 

Mens Division

1st Place:                     PETER WALLACE (Napier GC) 33 pts c/b
Runner-up:                   PETER KELLY (Hastings GC) 33 pts c/b        
3rd Place:                     PETER BANNISTER (Napier GC) 33 pts          

Women’s Division

1st Place:                     VAL GOULDING (Napier GC) 33 pts
Runner-up:                   SUE McNAE (Hastings GC) 32 pts c/b          
3rd Place:                     SUE COLSON (Hastings GC) 32 pts c/b    
                
Competitive Nearest to the Pin prizes on all the Par 3 holes were awarded on the day, and sponsored by Mercedes-Benz Financial Services. The winners included: -

Near to Pin Mens 7th              NOT STRUCK – LUCKY DRAW BRIAN UNDERWOOD             
Near to Pin Mens 11th            LES McCULLOUGH                                   
Near to Pin Women’s 4th        NOT STRUCK – LUCKY DRAW JO WHEATER

As part of the ‘Drive to the Major’, a Straightest Drive competition is also held on the day. The 8th hole at Napier was chosen for this competition, with the competition resulting in a lucky draw and Peter Bannister going home with the MBF prize.

An additional lucky prize draw was held for 1 eligible female golfer and 1 eligible male golfer. These lucky winners were: -

Male:               Peter Kelly (Hastings GC)
Female:           Sue McNae (Hastings GC)

Both Sue and Peter’s names will go in the lucky draw at the end of the 10 dealership golf days to fill the final 2 places to attend the New Zealand National Final at Cape Kidnappers.
